While a divorce ends a marriage, an annulment basically means the marriage never legally existed. There are few circumstances in which annulments are likely to be permitted instead of a divorce, including one person being married to someone else at the time of this marriage, one person being under a certain age, or both parties being the same sex or closely related.
An annulment does not mean that there will be no continuing financial obligations after the marriage. For example, if the couple has children, the court will consider child support and child custody. At Carr Law, we will clearly explain the differences associated with divorces and annulments so our clients can make informed decisions on the best method for them personally.
